  • Brief history of the country including any important people and major wars:It was settled by the Franks after the retreat of the Romans, who had conquered Celtic Gaul in 58–51 B.C. Charlemagne made it the center of his Empire of the West after A.D. 800. In the Middle Ages France was split into numerous fiefdoms and kingdoms, most of which were incorporated into the royal domain by the time of Louis XI (reigned 1461–1483). Widespread poverty and discontent led to the French Revolution (1789) and the end of the monarchy. The First Republic (1792–1804) was followed by the First Empire (1804–1815) under Napoleon Bonaparte, a period of constitutional monarchy (1814–1848), and a succession of republics broken by the Second Empire (1852–1870) under Louis Napoleon.   • Major cultural traditions (holidays/foods etc..):France's national holiday is the Fête Nationale (National Day), celebrated on July 14 in honor of the storming of the Bastille (July 14, 1789) during the French Revolution, and the Fête de la Fédération (July 14, 1790), a day of national reconciliation. Shrove Tuesday, the last day before Lent, with a festival called Carnaval. A lot of villagescelebrate for their local patron saints with a festival in July.They also celebrate Christmas, New Years, Easter, Labor Day, and Armistice Day.

  • Climate:Metopolitan France has a generally temperate climate, with nice summers and cool winters. Because of the country's size and location, there are four regional climates: "Atlantic" along the northern and western sides, "Mediterranean" along the southern side, "continental" in the main inland region, and "alpine" in the Alps. The Mediterranean climate, with its hot summers, is marked by a strong wind known as the Mistral which blows from north to northwest.
